A new memorial honoring the USS Arizona brought down during Pearl Harbor was recently unveiled by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community outside of Phoenix, Arizona.

According to American Military News, the USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River has been under construction for years, but now boasts one of the original boathouses preserved from the sunken ship and hundreds of lighted pillars, outlining what would have been the ship while simultaneously honoring the soldiers involved in the attack.

There was so much that went into this project,” said Blessing McAnlis-Vasquez, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Tourism Division Manager.

“It was a labor of love,” added Ric Hartman, who oversaw the process to include the USS Arizona’s boathouse in the memorial.
