Bay City Michigan’s annual veteran fishing event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Walleyes for Warriors fishing event is hosted each year by the Bay City Elks Lodge No. 88 and invites veterans onto boats for free walleye-fishing trips on Saginaw Bay. Approximately 250 veterans participate every year with the help of 100-125 boat captains, who volunteer their time, reported MLive.

Originally scheduled to June 13th-14th, this year’s event would have been the 10th anniversary celebration.

“It’s a labor of love for a lot of people that come together for that day,” said George Lynch, president of Walleyes for Warriors Inc.

“Ultimately they need to stay safe and we want them to to stay safe, we want to be able to do this for many years to come with these guys. I have zero tolerance for anyone getting hurt on my watch,” he continued.

“There’s going to be another day and another time and we’ll be back at this thing. That’s [what] our devotion to the veterans is, we’ll never forget you. We’re thinking about you right now.”
