University in Washington offers free college course for veterans

Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Washington is now offering a free college course to local veterans. 

The free course, called Clemente’s Veteran Initiative, is a 12-week, 24-class seminar exploring themes of war and reconciliation through the examination of philosophy, literature, art, history, and writing. 

The course began on Feb 24th and will run until May 13th, with classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the PLU campus. Books and instructional materials are provided, and childcare and transportation assistance is also available.

Any veteran is eligible to apply, and veterans interested in taking more college classes in the future can choose to earn up to three transferable credits from the course . 

“By reading, viewing, and discussing works inspired by military conflicts throughout history, CVI students will have an opportunity to create conversational bridges to help mend the divides that often separate us,” describes PLU. 

The free-for-veterans course was made possible by a $200,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
